Things

So, i'm a little behind the times, technologically speaking. We just got our very first Ipod, I have a $50 flip phone from 2006, and Gordon just taught me how to download songs for ringtones. ("Blue suede shoes", in case you were wondering).

Here is a confession: I love the easy access to pretty things, facilitated by technology. Who isn't addicted to Pinterest? I do not allow myself on there if I want to be a productive person that day.

But today, i'm just tired of things. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate beauty and genius and the cleverness of all the people behind all of the things. And if you don't know me...let it be clear that I have a lot of things.

I just wonder about the time spent dreaming about pillow shams, hair pins, candle sticks, and christmas lists. Is this really what it's about? And aren't we tired of envying other people's things? Or being judged by the presentation of your things?

Is there a direct relationship between things and anxiety? Who knows. But I've always found it interesting that Jesus talks about "Treasures in Heaven", followed by "Do not Worry" in Matthew.

"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:20-21

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than clothes?" Matthew 6:25

This Holiday season I want to make it my challenge to seek beauty in that which is not a "thing." And I think I will find it.

That verse (the first one) makes me want to paint it in some way. I love the imagery of moths and rust and treasure and a heart.

I love YOUR heart Sharon!

Oh would you? I love it too. I would never think to pair moths and rust as equals. Dark beauty! I'll buy paint for you when you do it!
