Well, almost at the end of my 2nd week at Hascal Sjoholm, and I am loving it!
This week I was handed a file cabinet, STUFFED, with bags and bags of receipts, 600 handwritten check stubs, doctors notes, candy wrappings, and the assignment of setting a Quickbooks system for this poor poor company that is in desparate need of a computerized accounting system. Translation: i''m required to do a year's worth of accounting as fast as possible.
Oh, and did I mention that the owner, who writes the checks, is Russian and has poor English and awful handwriting???? It took me an hour to realize that "Fone" meant "Telephone Expense". I think i've spent more time googling the names of possible vendors than actually accounting. But I cannot lie, it is SO MUCH FUN. One big puzzle, that i'm getting paid for.
Then, right before I was about to go home today, one of our Client's payroll systems went down and I ended up working overtime setting them up in Quickbooks so that they could pay their employees tonight. Whirlwind!
And this is why I chose accounting: the satisfaction of making order out of chaos. some people look at me funny when I tell them I'm an accountant. And I can see why, i'm not a naturally organized person, I smile a lot, and sometimes I spill things on myself. However, I can't help but think mathematically, and solutions to problems bring me so much joy.
Some people don't know how to function in a chaotic situation, which I think is something that sets me apart from the other interns i'm with. I'm not afraid at all to start digging in the mess. I know the answer is there and that the end of the day debits will equal credits. It's part of who God made me to be, and i'm so thankful to be using what some may see as a weakness to help others.
